If you’re considering divorce, one of your many decisions will be what kind of divorce is best for you. There are three main types of divorce:

Collaboration
Collaborative divorce helps divorcing couples come to a mutually agreed upon, negotiated settlement without the threat of court. It offers a civilized, solutions-based approach to ending a relationship. Based upon consideration and respect, collaborative divorce also keeps a divorcing or separating couple in control of the process—rather than giving that control over to a judge.

Litigation
A litigated divorce is one where spouses utilize the court system to resolve their differences. Litigation may be necessary in situations where one party is unwilling to share information, actively hides information, or where settlement just can’t be reached through other means.

Mediation
Mediation is a voluntary process that allows you and your spouse to make decisions based upon an understanding of your interests and views, your spouse’s interests and views, and the circumstances that you both face.

Divorce coach Karen McMahon of Journey Beyond Divorce conducted a series of podcast interviews to help her listeners decide what kind of divorce is right for them. Karen invited me to speak about divorce mediation, the process where you and your spouse meet together with the mediator in 3-way meetings to identify the issues that need to be resolved, to exchange all requested information and documents, and to utilize non-adversarial problem-solving techniques to arrive at an agreement.

Navigating Divorce:
The Many Dimensions, Decisions and Difficulties

Stepping into divorce is like entering a foreign country where you do not know the landscape, language or culture, says divorce coach Karen McMahon. Karen’s Journey Beyond Divorce Podcast provides a perfect opportunity to begin identifying and practicing new ways of thinking, being, and doing: “Our Journey Beyond Divorce podcasts help you to navigate the shifting world that you currently inhabit, and utilize your struggles as stepping-stones that lead to inner strength, clarity, and confidence;” and is a free podcast on iTunes and Stitchr.
