The initial client meeting is one of the most important events in a client’s case as it is the first opportunity for the personal injury attorney to evaluate the merit and value of the client’s claim as well as answer any questions that the client may have about the client’s claim. To enable the attorney to proceed as efficiently and as quickly as possible, the client should bring the following items to the meeting:

  1. Health insurance information, including the policy (if the client has a copy available), or more likely health insurance cards;
  2. Medical records and bills (if any) or a list of all medical providers for which the client sought treatment.  The client should also bring what is commonly referred to as Estimate of Benefits the client may have received from their health insurance company concerning payment of medical bills;
  3. A copy of the client’s auto policy or the declarations page (this is the page that lists coverages);
  4. Police report (if obtained);
  5. Any correspondence concerning the claim, either received or sent.  This includes letters or emails between the client and the at-fault insurance company or letters and emails between the client and their own insurance company
  6. Any correspondence (emails and/or letters) between the client and the client’s health insurance company for medical expenses or liens;
  7. Any correspondence (emails and/or letters) between the client and the client’s medical providers, which may include liens the client signed with a medical provider for treatment or a letter from the medical provider about a lien or bills owed (including collections bills);
  8. Any photos the client took or received;
  9. Invoices, estimates or receipts for out of pocket expenses for medical expenses or personal property expenses such as personal property that was damaged and vehicle repairs or estimates; and
  10. A list of any witnesses (with contact information) that the client is aware of or spoke to at the scene or thereafter.

The list above will allow the attorney to make a determination as to what your case needs and doesn’t need.
