The mission of the Connecticut Insurance Department is consumer protection. The Department carries out its mission by enforcing state insurance laws to ensure policyholders are treated fairly, by providing assistance, outreach, and education to help consumers make sound choices, and by regulating the industry in a fair and consistent manner that fosters market competition for availability of insurance.

The State of Connecticut also has an Ethics Statement that outlines the code of ethics for all Insurance Department employees, but there are also rules for former state employees and contractors hired by the Insurance Department.

The State of Connecticut Insurance Department encourages consumers to file a complaint if they believe that the insurance company, broker, agent or adjuster failed to act in accordance with the insurance contract or Connecticut insurance laws and regulations.

Should policyholders wish to file a complaint with the Connecticut Division of Insurance, you need to click on this link and then click on “File Complaint Online” or “File a Complaint by Mail” to start the process.

Once you file online, an examiner will be assigned the next business day. The examiner will contact you via email with information on how the complaint process will proceed.

On the link above, you can also search for recent Bulletins, Commissioner’s Orders, Dates and Deadlines, Enforcement Actions, Forms and Applications, Latest Notices, Laws and Regulations and Reports.

The State of Connecticut, Division of Insurance Consumer Helpline can also be reached at: (800) 203-3447 or (860) 297-3900

When fillng out the online complaint, you have the opportunity to attach documents and other pertinent information that will assist the Department in assessing your claim.

If you have employed a public adjuster to handle the adjustment of your claim, I would suggest asking them for assistance in filling out the complaint form as they are usually knowledgeable about the claims handing process.

My license in Connecticut is currently pending and should be active this year. If you have any claims in Connecticut, Merlin Law Group can handle them for you.
