While I have been thinking about Memorial Day, and the sacrifice of their lives that many soldiers made in wars past, it occurred to me that, rather than celebrate the manly, protective, aggressive traits that we need in soldiers, modern media and society seems dedicated to tearing down masculine traits. Certainly, these traits, taken to the extreme, have caused wars and harm. But, the solution is not to ban masculinity from our culture, or attempt to legislate gender differences. It would be far better to celebrate masculinity, and its virtues, and condemn the acts, not the gender. This article articulates the issue well:
