Increased police presence and DUI checkpoints are likely in New Orleans during New Years and Mardi Gras.

The holidays may be wrapping up in most places around the country. However, in New Orleans, the New Year celebration means Mardi Gras is right around the corner. We’re just getting started.

All over New Orleans, locals and tourists will be celebrating for the next couple months. There will be no shortage of partying, drinking, and revelry.

The NOPD will also be out in full force around the city to combat drunk driving. There will likely be multiple checkpoints around New Orleans during the holidays and through Mardi Gras. If you have been drinking and you are stopped at a NOPD checkpoint, you will likely be charged with a DUI and taken to jail.

Drunk Driving Checkpoint Locations in New Orleans

NOPD does not release the locations of their DUI checkpoints ahead of time. However, checkpoints are usually set up at centrally-located and heavy-traffic intersections around the city.

Recent NOPD DUI checkpoints have been set up at:

  • Tchoupitoulas and Andrew Higgins (Downtown)
  • North Claiborne and Elysian Fields
  • Claiborne and Orleans
  • Clearview Parkway and Veterans Boulevard
  • Pontchartrain Road
  • France Street and North Dorgenois

Claiborne is a hotspot for DUI checkpoints in New Orleans. NOPD also often sets up checkpoints downtown or near the interstate.

Celebrate Responsibly and Never Drink and Drive

If you have been drinking or used any drugs, never get behind the wheel of a car. Drinking alcohol and using drugs impairs your ability to drive, as well as your reflexes and judgement.

If you drink and drive, you run the risk of getting charged with a DUI and sent to jail. Additionally, anytime you get behind the wheel while you are not sober, you endanger yourself and others on the road.

Around New Years and the Holidays, drunk driving is up. The period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s is when the most DUI’s are charged nationwide. In New Orleans, this period extends through Mardi Gras.

Even if you’ve only had a couple drinks, or if you think you feel fine—it’s never worth the risk.

If you’re going to party, make sure you have a plan to get home. With the rise of rideshare services like Uber and Lyft, there’s now more ways than ever to get home without driving drunk.
