The Law Society Gazette (UK) reports that the UK has had its first Skype trial which could be another way to ensure court business continues during adverse circumstances (and even generally).
It was a three day hearing where the judge, seven lawyers, eleven witnesses, three experts and two journalists joined the hearing online through Skype for Business which, besides allowing everyone to see and hear those taking part allows for the hearing to be recorded.
It was a trial about a man who suffered a major stroke and the disagreement over his treatment. Senior advocates involved in the matter say the trial was very effective.
There is no reason why this method should not be used in ordinary circumstances. There are many ways of keeping justice accessible. The question to ask is how do we get justice, rather than how do we do what we are doing now, differently.
