It is well documented that the 9/11 attacks have caused a number of respiratory and other medical issues for survivors and first responders. Some people may not know, however, that a wide range of skin cancer has also been linked to the attacks, including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma.

The good news is that survivors and first responders who have been diagnosed with skin cancer can seek benefits under a pair of federal compensation programs. The World Trade Center Health Program provides healthcare benefits, while the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund makes monetary benefits available to people who were disabled as a result of the attacks.

At Pitta & Baione, we are experienced attorneys with a strong track record of helping people get benefits and compensation under both programs. Our 9/11 fund attorneys have dedicated their careers to assisting the people who responded heroically when New York and the country needed them the most.

If you or a loved one is considering seeking benefits or having trouble getting a claim approved, it is important to seek the advice of a seasoned attorney as soon as possible. VCF benefits are distributed on a “first come, first served” basis and there are various deadlines for filing a claim.

Common Forms of Skin Cancer for 9/11 Survivors and First Responders

Cancer is unfortunately common among 9/11 survivors and first responders. In fact the number of people receiving WTCH benefits who have been diagnosed with some form of cancer has jumped by more than 60 percent in the last two years.

Skin cancer is among the most common. That includes:

    • Basal cell carcinoma: This form of the disease affects the basal cells, which are among the top layers of the skin. It causes uncontrolled growth in those cells, often as a result of overexposure to ultraviolet light.
    • Squamous cell carcinoma: This type of cancer results in the uncontrolled growth of squamous cells, which are also located near the skin’s surface and regularly shed.
    • Melanoma: A common form of cancer, melanoma affects the pigment-producing cells that give color to the skin.

Regardless of the type of skin cancer, our lawyers can help you navigate the claims process and ensure that you get the full benefits to which you are entitled. We are committed to taking the time to understand each client’s unique situation and guiding you through the process with experience and personal attention.
