CAPE CORAL FL – Florida Highway Patrol reported a fatal motorcycle crash in North Fort Myers Thursday morning.

The crash took place as a 50 year old man from Fort Myers was riding a motorcycle on northbound on S.R. 739 S.R. 739 (Tamiami Trail North) approaching the intersection with Laurel Drive with a green traffic signal.

At the same time a 38 year old woman from Cape Coral was driving a sport utility vehicle on southbound on Tamiami Trail North in the left turn lane at the intersection with Laurel Drive, waiting to turn left onto eastbound Laurel Drive facing a yellow flashing arrow turn lane signal. Also in the SUV were 2 passengers, an 11 year old girl, and a 13 year old girl.

At 7:29:00 AM the driver of the SUV failed to yield to the oncoming motorcycle and attempted to turn left driving across the lanes of traffic and directly into the path of the oncoming motorcycle.

The motorcyclist attempted to avoid the crash by braking sharply and the motorcycle went down onto it’s right side, still traveling toward the SUV.

The motorcycle crashed into the right side of the front of the SUV, and the motorcyclist was thrown from the bike before coming to a rest still withing the intersection. The motorcycle continued on coming to a stop laying on it’s right side facing west.

The SUV came to a controlled stop on Laurel Drive facing to the east on Laurel Drive.

The motorcyclist died from his injuries sustained in the crash. None of the occupants in SUV were injured in the accident, and they all had been wearing seat belts during the crash.

The report does not state is the motorcyclist had been wearing a helmet during the accident and FHP has stated the crash remains under investigation.
