Knowing Rules. Execupundit describes lawyering today, even if not specifically. He advises that it isn’t enough to know the rules. You must also: 1. Know the exceptions to the rules. 2. Know the proclivities of those who enforce the rules (like Judges and Legislators). Their proclivities can become precedential. Your job, as a lawyer, is to explain all that in language simple enough to make an impact on someone who doesn’t want to be there to hear you (clients). Often, even a great explanation can’t get through to someone who is impervious to logic and reality. But, along with Marcus Aurelius, we must acknowledge that we will meet many people like that today, and, since they are our brothers and sisters, we must accept them for what they are, humans who are simply unaware of what is right and good. Tough job, this living thing.
