On December 3, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) initiated a rulemaking seeking ideas and input on proposals for a regulatory framework for automated driving systems (ADS).  This is the first time the federal government has proposed affirmative regulation of ADS, and offers a rare opportunity for private parties to help shape the establishment of a new structure and approach for ADS safety regulation and policy for the deployment of autonomous vehicles in the US.
