On February 18, 2021, President Biden’s immigration reform bill was introduced in Congress this week by Senator Bob Menendez and Congresswoman Linda Sánchez. The legislation is called the U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021 and it includes the main tenants that President Biden announced during his first days in office. The legislation is co-sponsored by several Senators and Representatives and the focal point of the legislation is an 8-year path to citizenship for many of the 11 million people who currently live in the United States without lawful immigration status. The legislation also includes reforms to family-based immigration and employment-based immigration. In addition to these reforms, the legislation also includes elements to address the root causes of migration to the United States from Central America, to improve immigration courts, and to modernize U.S. borders. This legislation would make many changes to the U.S. immigration system and therefore, it is likely to face extensive debate in Congress. Our office will be following the legislation and providing updates as it progresses through Congress.
