1. Immigration Agencies Ordered Not To Use Term ‘Illegal Alien’ Under New Biden Policy – Monday, April 19

A new policy outlined by the Biden administration will now require staffers at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to eliminate the words “illegal alien” and “assimilation” from their vocabulary in internal and external communications. The policy suggests “undocumented noncitizen” and “integration” as substitute terms instead. This is part of an ongoing effort by the Biden administration to create a more humane immigration system and undo damage from the fear-mongering policies and rhetoric of the last administration that especially affected immigrants of color. At McEntee Law Group, we welcome this change and we hope it is a sign that there are more substantive changes on the horizon.

“We set a tone and example for our country and partners across the world. We enforce our nation’s laws while also maintaining the dignity of every individual with whom we interact. The words we use matter and will serve to further confer that dignity to those in our custody.”

—Troy Miller, Top Official at Customs and Border Protection

2. Bush criticizes GOP isolationism, anti-immigration rhetoric – Tuesday, April 20

This week, former President George W. Bush criticized the Republican Party for its anti-immigrant rhetoric, calling it, “’isolationist, protectionist and, to a certain extent, nativist.’” While former President Bush did not call out former President Donald Trump by name, he does allude to a recent surge in anti-immigrant rhetoric. However, anti-immigrant sentiments are not limited to any one party, and former President Bush has announced that he will lobby his own party to find bipartisan support for necessary reforms.

“It’s a beautiful country we have and yet it’s not beautiful when we condemn, call people names and scare people about immigration.”

—Former U.S. President George W. Bush

3. Featured Issue: First 100 Days of the Biden Administration – Tuesday, April 20

With the first 100 days of President Biden’s presidency winding down, we thought it would be helpful to have a list of measures the Biden administration has taken in the first 100 days so you can see it for yourself. Some noteworthy measures include the revocation of the public charge rulethe end of the immigrant visa ban, and the memorandum preserving DACA. While these are promising first steps to making real change, we have a long way to go.
