MANATEE COUNTY – Florida Highway Patrol announced a single-vehicle crash on State Road 64 has resulted in one person deceased and one person in critical condition.

The crash happened very early Saturday morning as a Sport Utility Vehicle, driven by a 21-year-old man from Myakka City, with a 20-year-old male passenger,  was traveling eastbound on State Road 64 near the intersection with the Verna Bethany Road.

At 4:12 AM the SUV swerved into the south side grass shoulder of SR 64 off the roadway, then the driver attempted to get the vehicle back onto the road, but overcorrected, crossing the lane of travel and colliding with a guard rail then overturning.

The SUV came to a rest in a ditch on the north side of State Road 64.

The report states that the driver of the SUV had not been wearing a seatbelt during the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident.

The surviving passenger was wearing a safety belt and was taken to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition.

FHP has stated that the crash remains under investigation.
