NORTH PORT – Florida Highway Patrol announced a woman is in critical condition after being struck by a  car while walking along a Tamiami Trail Access Road east of Oritz Boulevard.

The crash took place as a 24-year-old woman from North Port was driving a Volvo sedan eastbound on the right side of the Tamiami Trail access road, East of Oritz Blvd. Wednesday morning.

As the Volvo traveled down the road, a 55-year-old woman from Kodiak Alaska was walking with the direction of traffic in an eastbound direction along the side of the Tamiami Trail access road, with the Volvo sedan approaching from behind.

At 8:15 AM the driver of the Volvo sedan failed to see the pedestrian walking alongside the road and the front of the Volvo crashed into the pedestrian.

After the accident, the Volvo came to a controlled stop on the left side (westbound) side of the Tamiami Trail access road facing East.

The pedestrian survived the collision and was Air Lifted to Sarasota Memorial Hospital in critical condition for emergency medical treatment.
