Canada has made the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP) permanent to address growing labour shortages in the Atlantic Canadian provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador. Candidates from the pilot program who received an endorsement certificate from the Atlantic Provinces can apply for Permanent Residence in the new program. The pilot program was closed on December 31, 2021.

The new AIP includes several features that were not included in the pilot program:

  • Coherent responsibility of the partners involved
  • Reinforcing the requirements of the program for the convenience of newcomers
  • Enhanced support training for employers

3 Atlantic Immigration Program Pathways

The Atlantic Immigration Program is an employer-driven pathway to permanent residence for skilled foreign workers and international graduates from a Canadian institution who want to work and live in one of Canada’s four Atlantic provinces. AIP helps employers hire qualified candidates for jobs they haven’t been able to fill locally. You must receive a job offer from a designated employer in Atlantic Canada to participate in the program. To hire a foreigner through the AIP, employers are not required to complete a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).

There are 3 pathways to permanent residence under the Atlantic Immigration Program:

  1. Atlantic High-Skilled Program
Skilled workers with professional, management, or technical experience
  2. Atlantic Intermediate-Skilled Program
High school education or job-specific training
  3. Atlantic International Graduate Program
Degree, diploma or any other credential from a publicly-funded institution in an Atlantic province

Canada continues to add and expand immigration programs to attract educated and skilled foreigners to urban and rural areas to help grow the economy and keep Canada competitive.

The Atlantic Immigration Program will complement the Provincial Nominee Programs in each Atlantic province.
