The Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism is pleased to announce that Executive Director Erika Harold will speak on civility in politics at the 2022 Renewing Illinois Summit, which is hosted by the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
The Summit will be held on Thursday, September 29, and Friday, September 30, at SIU Carbondale. The 2022 theme is “One Illinois: Noble Aspiration or Impossible Dream?” The event will provide an opportunity for Illinois college and university students to explore questions of state identity and regional tensions with leaders who are playing a role in Illinois politics, media, and the legal system.
Harold’s talk will be held on Friday, September 30. She will speak on her previous political and legal career and her current role in promoting professionalism to Illinois lawyers and judges at the Commission on Professionalism.
“I am thrilled to participate in the Renewing Illinois Summit. I look forward to discussing with Illinois’ exceptional college students how we can rise above increasing incivility in the public sphere and build confidence in our government, legal system, and democracy as a whole,” said Harold. “Many of these civic-minded students may choose a career in public office or the law, which makes laying a foundation for civility from the start an essential part of strengthening our state.”
Harold joins distinguished speakers including Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives Emanuel “Chris” Welch, former Illinois Congressman and U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza, and a panel of journalists who cover the state including Shia Kapos of Politico Illinois Playbook, Shruti Singh of Bloomberg, Jennifer Fuller of WSIU, and Jeff Rogers of the Illinois Press Foundation.
The Renewing Illinois Summit aims to connect state leaders with the viewpoints of college students as they contemplate the future of the state. It also hopes to build a network of students who will participate in Illinois’ civic life following graduation.
“The Renewing Illinois Summit is one of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute’s signature events, bringing the often-unheard perspectives of college students to those in leadership positions around the state,” said John Shaw, director of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute. “We are pleased that Erika Harold will share her ideas and experiences with the students and learn theirs, as we aim to build a constructive agenda for the future of Illinois.”
