Why You Need to Document Your Invention
Documenting is important because it proves that you are the rightful owner of the intellectual property. Without documentation, it would be very difficult to prove that you are the inventor in the event that someone else tries to claim your invention as their own. Further, if you ever decide to license or sell your invention, good documentation will make the process much easier. Lastly, if you ever need to enforce your rights in court, detailed documentation will be extremely helpful to your case.
How to Document Your Invention Properly
There are a few key things that should be included in every invention disclosure document. As I told Mateo and Jennifer, documenting your invention is not just writing down your idea. Although of course that’s an important part of it.
When you document your invention, you should include:
- A detailed description
- Drawings and flowcharts
- Known prior art
- Advantages over the prior art
- Surprising Results
- Business Importance
- Any external people you’ve told about it
- And last but not least, who the inventors are
With the right documentation in place, just like Mateo and Jennifer, you can move forward with confidence.
