Inventors Mateo and Jennifer learn what it’s like to work with a patent firm in Episode 5 of my video series “How An Ordinary Inventor Can Turn Into A Millionaire (The Hero’s Journey)” (available ONLY on YouTube)!

====================

You’ve invented something new and amazing and you’re ready to make your millions, right?

Not so fast.

If you want to be successful as an inventor, then you need to protect your invention with a patent. You need to have a patent attorney by your side every step of the way.

Why You Need a Patent Attorney

Getting a patent is a complicated process, and it’s one that you shouldn’t try to do on your own. An attorney helps you navigate the process and also ensures that your invention is properly protected.

Here are just a few of the things a patent attorney does for you:

1. A Patent Attorney helps you determine if your invention is patentable.

There are four criteria that must be met in order for an invention to be patented. The criteria are: novelty, usefulness, non-obviousness, and enablement. A patent attorney determines whether or not your invention meets these criteria.

2. A Patent Attorney conducts a prior art search.

Before you file a patent application, it’s important to do a thorough search of existing patents to make sure that your invention is novel. This is called a prior art clearance search. A patent attorney conducts a thorough search for you; and provides a legal opinion too.

3. A Patent Attorney prepares and files your patent application.

The patent application process is complicated. The forms and documents need to be completed correctly for your application to be accepted. A patent attorney takes care of all of this so that you don’t have to go it alone.

4. A Patent Attorney prosecutes your patent application.

Once your patent application has been filed, it will be assigned to a Patent Examiner who will review it to make sure that it meets all the requirements for issuance. If it does not, the Examiner will issue what’s called an Office Action, which will list all of the problems with the application. A patent attorney can help you respond to Office Actions so that you stand the best chance possible of having your patent issued.

5. A Patent Attorney helps you preserve and enforce your rights .

Once you’ve obtained a patent, it’s important to monitor for infringement so that you can take action if someone does try to copy or sell your invention without permission. A patent attorney can help you with this so that you can rest assured knowing that your invention is protected.

The bottom line is this: if you want to be successful as an inventor, then get yourself a good patent partner!

Your chances of success increase dramatically, and you’ll have peace of mind knowing that your invention is properly protected.
