Alliance to Stop Foodborne Illness

The Alliance to Stop Foodborne Illness is now accepting nominations for its third annual “40 Food Safety Professionals Under 40” program, an initiative celebrating young leaders driving innovation and progress in food safety.

Applications are open until 11:59 p.m. EDT on July 7, 2025, with honorees to be announced in October via LinkedIn.

Eligible nominees must be between 18 and 39 years old as of July 7, 2025, and have made significant contributions to food safety and its culture in fields such as industry, academia, journalism, or the regulatory sector. A complete application includes an up-to-date résumé and a one-page cover letter outlining specific examples of the nominee’s impact, such as advancements in safety protocols, public education, or policy reform, as well as their leadership potential.

Self-nominations are warmly encouraged, though previous winners are ineligible to reapply. Nominators are urged to highlight measurable outcomes, such as awards, recognitions, or quantifiable improvements in food safety practices.

Nominations can be submitted here.

Food Safety News writers recognized
Launched in 2023, the program recognizes rising stars worldwide who are transforming the food safety landscape. Food Safety News’s Newsletter Editor, staff writer, and Social Media Coordinator, Jonan Pilet, was honored in the 2024 class for his impactful work. Since joining Food Safety News in 2019, Pilet has delivered daily reports on food recalls and outbreaks, conducted in-depth interviews with scientists, regulators, and foodborne illness victims, and managed engaging content across platforms like Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Threads. He also produces videos for the Food Safety News YouTube channel, amplifying critical safety information.

“Jonan Pilet’s work is instrumental in bringing vital food safety information to consumers,” said The Alliance. “His multifaceted contributions significantly enhance the reach and impact of food safety information.”

The 2024 class featured professionals from 35 organizations globally. The full class can be viewed here.

In 2023, Food Safety News’ European correspondent and staff writer Joe Whitworth was recognized for his insightful reporting from Manchester, England. His work provides context on food safety challenges, particularly from a European perspective.

“I am delighted to be featured in the Top 40 Food Safety Professionals Under 40 and that my work to promote food safety in the public domain has been acknowledged,” Whitworth said about the honor.

The Alliance encourages nominations that showcase innovation, leadership, and dedication to reducing foodborne illness.
