In Virginia, a mother was charged with felony child abuse after making her children ride in the trunk. Evidently, although it is incredibly dangerous, it is not illegal in most states for people to ride in the back of pickup trucks–what’s the difference? Meanwhile, the Freakonomics people believe that child safety seats for children over age 2 do not make an appreciable difference from a plain old seat belt–or at least the case is unproven.
