The Winter 2005 issue of the Journal of Economic Perspectives has a symposium titled, “Sociology and Economics” (Introduction available here for non-subscribers). Austrians have long realized the gains from exchange with Sociology.
In my view further gains exist in the following areas:
1. The structure of organizations – this is already evident in the growing literature on the Austrian theory of the firm (see here, here, here and here).
2. Diffusion theory – especially as it applies to the diffusion if entrepreneurial innovation in goods, services and ideas.
3. Group identity – as it relates to social change.
4. Social capital – most efforts to incorporate this concept into economic models has focused on quantifying social capital via a proxy. Austrians emphasize the role of the market as a process of discovering various social capital combinations. The best treatment of social capital from an Austrian perspective can be found in the work of Emily Chamlee-Wright.
