PhilippinessFamily planning advocates in the Philippines said Saturday they arereadying a legal suit against a member of President Gloria Arroyo’scabinet for his opposition to artificial contraception.

Thegroups said they were readying legal action against EnvironmentSecretary Lito Atienza for removing all contraceptives from cityclinics when he was mayor of the capital Manila.

The suit aimsto “hold (Atienza) liable for acts which caused injury to women,” saidElizabeth Pangalangan, executive director of the Reproductive Health,Rights and Ethics Centre, attached to the state university.

Hergroup and other organisations presented testimony on how Atienza, adevout Catholic, introduced a policy in 2000 banning city governmentclinics from issuing contraceptives or informing people how to use orobtain them.
