If abortion is legalised, many lives of mothers will be saved, a health specialist has said. Dr Raymond Tweheyo, a resident mentor at the Mulago School of Public Health, said there are over 6,000 deaths every year resulting from unsafe abortions which mainly result from stigma. Abortion is illegal in Uganda.
“Forty six per cent of mothers in Uganda have unplanned pregnancies and as a result many of these opt for abortion to get rid of the unwanted babies,” Dr Tweheyo said. “However, it is absurd that most of these mothers use unsafe ways and as result, many lives of both mothers and babies are lost,” he added while speaking at a media workshop in Wakiso District last week. . . .
