USCIS launches new user-friendly web based application filing system called ELIS, short for Electronic Immigration Status Streamlined Process.  Individuals and their attorneys can apply online to extend or change their non-immigrant status for certain visa types online 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.   According to USCIS, the benefits of using ELIS include the abilities to file applications and pay fees online, shorter processing times, create and update a user profile, receive notices, and respond to requests electronically.  Additionally, the system includes tools to combat fraud and identify national security concerns.

“Today marks a significant milestone in our agency’s history,” said USCIS Director Alejandro Mayorkas. “We have launched the foundation for the web-based future of our agency and our immigration benefits system. USCIS ELIS will transform how we interact with our customers and how we manage the 6-7 million applications we receive each year.”

In the first release of USCIS ELIS, certain customers will be able to file Form I-539, Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status.  The process is programmed to streamline the processing of the I-539 (and other non-immigrant visa classifications: B-1, B-2, F-1, M-1, or M-2).  The ELIS system allows both the beneficiary and/or the beneficiary’s legal representative to create an online account in order to file the visa application even more efficiently than before.  In 2005, USCIS implemented an electronic-filing system, however this system requires applicants to submit their supporting documentation via mail.  The new ELIS program is a more efficient and convenient system as individuals may upload documents directly through the website.
