Michael Heizer’s “Levitated Mass” is finally on exhibit at LACMA this week. The work generated “massive attention” according to this LA Times article.
The intrigue is not surprising – it took 11 days to make the 63-mile journey from Riverside, California to the museum – a journey that would take a human being just 20 hours to walk and a car under two hours to drive. “The 340-ton boulder traveled on a specially made transporter at just a few miles per hour” in March. Crowds followed the sculpture, at one point gathering for an impromptu street party around it.
The $10 million dollar sculpture is held by a bridge-like structure, so that viewers can see it from all sides, including from below. LACMA director finds this most interesting, quoting the artist by saying, “when do you get to see the bottom of sculptures?”
