Brian Bewley, former Senior Counsel in the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Counsel to the Inspector General and Special Assistant United States Attorney, has joined Husch Blackwell as a Partner.

As Senior Counsel for the past five years, Bewley has focused on healthcare fraud and abuse and compliance issues and led numerous enforcement actions stemming from violations of the False Claims Act, Anti-kickback Statute, Stark, EMTALA, and the OIG’s Civil Monetary Penalties Law and Exclusion authorities. In 2010, Bewley was also appointed to serve as a Special Assistant United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, where he worked on healthcare fraud and abuse matters.

Prior to serving as Senior Counsel and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney, Bewley served as a Senior Attorney in the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of General Counsel (2005-2007), where he led enforcement actions against federally funded scientific researchers for data falsification. Bewley began his legal career through the prestigious Attorney General’s Honors Program at the Department of Justice (2004-2005), where he focused on enforcement matters involving the Controlled Substances Act.

Our Insight, Your Advantage.  As healthcare organizations attempt to navigate the regulatory environment, they now have a unique advocate.  “Brian’s insider knowledge of the federal regulatory system is invaluable to healthcare institutions operating within a very complicated regulatory environment and, at times, facing enforcement, questions or complaints from federal agencies,” said Curt Chase, Chair of the firm’s Healthcare Department. “His experience and national connections give Brian the skills to be a very strong preventative counselor for healthcare organizations. We believe he will provide our clients with valuable insight on compliance and quality issues.”
