Three newly minted district judges recently took the oath of office to serve on the bench for the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts.
Judge Indira Talwani, who will serve out of Boston, received a B.A. degree from Harvard-Radcliffe College in 1982 and a J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law in 1988. Prior to joining the bench, Judge Talwani was a partner at Segal Roitman, LLP in Boston. She also served as a law clerk to Judge Stanley A. Weigel in the Northern District of California. Judge Talwani was nominated by President Barack Obama on September 24, 2013, and she was confirmed by the United States Senate on May 8, 2014.
Judge Mark G. Mastroianni, who will serve out of Springfield, received a B.A. degree from American International College in 1986, and a J.D. from Western New England College School of Law in 1989. Prior to joining the bench, Judge Mastroianni served as the Hampden County District Attorney. Between 1995 and 2011, he was in private practice as a practitioner in criminal defense. Judge Mastroianni was nominated by President Obama on September 24, 2013, and he was confirmed by the Senate on June 4, 2014.
Judge Leo T. Sorokin, who will serve out of Boston, received a B.A. degree from Yale College in 1983 and a J.D. from Columbia Law School in 1991. Prior to his appointment, he had been serving as a U.S. Magistrate Judge on the court. From 1997 to 2005, Judge Sorokin worked as an Assistant Federal Public Defender. He also served as law clerk to Judge Rya W. Zobel from 1991 to 1992. Judge Sorokin was nominated by President Obama on December 19, 2013, and he was confirmed by the Senate on June 10, 2014.
