The State Bar of Texas, the Texas Access to Justice Commission, the American Bar Association, and others proudly support National Pro Bono Celebration Week (Oct. 25-31).
Pro Bono week is an opportunity to educate the public about the good work the legal community is doing to improve the lives of vulnerable Texans and to encourage more individuals to get involved in pro bono support of the legal system.
Today, we are featuring Lucrecia Davis, a shareholder at Jackson Lewis PC.
Davis has worked in corporate immigration for about 15 years. Despite her busy schedule, she found time to volunteer at Catholic Charities’ St. Frances Cabrini Center for Immigration Legal Assistance as a pro bono attorney.
Recently Davis represented a 17-year-old girl from El Salvador on an asylum case. The young client had received death threats from gang members in her hometown and was fearful of returning to El Salvador. To make matters a bit more difficult, the teen missed a previous hearing with the immigration court, resulting in a removal order in absentia.
Davis worked diligently to obtain a motion to reopen the teen’s removal proceedings. She prepared a brief and supporting evidence to present to the asylum officer sent to interview her client. Davis’s client was granted asylum by the Houston Asylum Office a few weeks later.
Catholic Charities would like to offer thanks to Davis for her hard work and to all of the pro bono attorneys who have worked tirelessly to secure access to justice for their clients.
