Significant progress has been made to finalize the European Commission’s 2012 proposal to completely reform the European Union’s data protection laws—the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR or Regulation). The current EU data protection regime, the EU Data Protection Directive 95/46, is widely considered to be inadequate in light of advances in technology that rely on the use of personal data such as big data analytics.
