Something really scary is happening. I've often read, in both fiction and nonfiction, accounts of fascist politicians who rise to power with the help of thugs who intimidate political opponents using veiled (or unveiled) threats of violence. It alway seemed like something distant or long ago, like black and white footage of gangsters on running boards wearing fedoras. It couldn't happen here.
It's still not exactly happening here, but I can now more readily see how that can happen. A lot of people are already afraid and angry, in some ways with good reason and in some ways not.
