Camden NJ police are investigating the fatal shooting of a local man on a city street.
According to Camden authorities, the shooting occurred around 5:20 p.m. The Camden County Police Department received multiple calls about gunshots being fired somewhere on the 1000 block of Haddon Avenue in Camden, New Jersey.
Several police officers were dispatched to the area, where they found the victim lying on the corner of Haddon Avenue and Vernon Street and suffering from gunshot wounds.
The 28-year-old victim, who was from Camden, NJ, was rushed to nearby Cooper University Hospital. Tragically, doctors at the medical facility were unable to save the victim; he was pronounced dead less than 30 minutes after being shot.
Camden County law enforcement later ruled that the shooting was a homicide.
Since murder is classified as the most serious crime in the New Jersey Criminal Code, the person who fired the gunshots could be in store for significant penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, the intentional killing of someone can be classified as a first degree felony. Moreover, while most first degree felonies carry maximum punishments of 20 years in NJ State Prison, murder is treated differently; it can result in a penalty of life imprisonment, with a minimum mandatory term of incarceration of 30 years.
