Camden County NJ police are looking into the fatal shooting of a man who was walking on a street in Camden, NJ.
The homicide occurred around 9:20 p.m. The victim, a 24-year-old man from East Orange, New Jersey, was walking in the area of the 2800 block of North Constitution Road in Camden when someone shot and killed him.
According to law enforcement, the Camden County Police Department dispatched officers to the scene after getting a report of gunshots from the ShotSpotter detection system.
When Camden County NJ cops arrived at the scene, they found the victim in an alley.
The victim was immediately transported to nearby Cooper University Hospital, where doctors tried to save him. Tragically, doctors at the hospital pronounced the victim dead approximately 20 minutes after arrival.
Camden County officials are actively investigating the fatal shooting. Police have not yet been able to identify a suspect or a motive for the homicide.
If investigators eventually figure out the identity of the shooter, that individual would likely face criminal charges for first degree murder. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, murder is the most serious crime in the New Jersey Criminal Code. While most first degree felonies carry a maximum punishment of 20 years in NJ State Prison, a first degree murder conviction could lead to life imprisonment.
This homicide is the 18th homicide in Camden NJ in 2016, a drastic increase over the number of homicides committed in Camden by the same time last year.
