This post gives me occasion to remark that I think I would be happier living in New Zealand, Australia or Canada than the US. Of course, I'm not about the move there, for the reason that I'm an economic captive of California, for at least the next 10 years, or perhaps 5 if I win the lottery or something. The overall reason is these commonwealth countries strike me as having more egalitarian societies than we have in the US. Perhaps counter-intuitively, this is because they are in important respects less regulated than the US is. But all of these countries are trending the wrong way and probably by the time I die they will all be sliding toward termite-agedon, the triumph of the termite society that seems to be on the ascendancy.
That's the way I feel about it today, anyway. I'm aware that Canada has given up on free speech and there are various infringements of freedom downunder. I just suspect that in terms of daily life, you would feel more free and equal than you do here in SoCal. The subjective feeling of being a free and equal participant in society — that's what I think is going. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
