Many don’t realize that migrants who cross the Mediterranean from Libya to Europe often first cross the Sahara Desert into Libya itself. As the BBC reports, it’s a dangerous crossing.
Just two weeks ago, more than 40 migrants died of thirst when their truck broke down in the desert. Yesterday turned out better when 92 migrants near death were rescued by the Niger army.
According to the BBC, “It’s not known how many deaths there are every year – as it’s a vast, ungoverned region. But many migrants die of thirst, while others are robbed and attacked by criminal gangs and security forces.”
