Newark Criminal Defense LawyersLaw enforcement is investigating a fatal shooting in North Ward of Newark, New Jersey.

The victim was a 22-year-old resident of Newark. The Newark Police Department got a 911 call about a shooting just before midnight on the 100 block of Oraton Street in Newark, NJ. When cops arrived in the area, they saw the victim lying on the pavement and suffering from a gunshot wound.

Tragically, paramedics could not save the victim. Emergency medical personnel pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

The Newark Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office are conducting a joint investigation into the homicide. At this time, detectives have not yet been able to determine the shooter’s identity.

If investigators can eventually identify and capture the culprit, that person could face homicide charges for first degree murder and criminal weapons offenses for illegal possession of a handgun.

A conviction on the most serious charges of first degree murder could potentially result in life imprisonment in New Jersey State Prison. The mandatory minimum term of incarceration for a first degree murder conviction is 30 years behind bars.
