Q&A with Gisela Curi, Ackah Law Immigration Consultant
1. Why did you become an Immigration Consultant?
I wanted to work in a field that allowed me to help people and make a difference (and I did not like medicine!)
2. How did you decide to work in immigration law?
Through my own experience as an immigrant. I came to Canada when I was 18 years old, without any family members. Luckily, I met an incredible Immigration Consultant who helped me navigate through the entire process and become a Canadian citizen. On a casual conversation with my Immigration Consultant about my future in Canada as a citizen and how I was looking to help people, he mentioned I should look into immigration as a career. This was 12 years ago. How time flies!
3. Why does someone need to hire an immigration lawyer?
Immigration legislation can be tricky. Though most information regarding programs and processes is readily available, it can be cumbersome and especially stressful to do the journey on your own. Immigration specialists help you keep your peace of mind knowing that you are, actually, on the right path.
4. If you could change one thing about immigration law, what would it be?
I would increase the accessibility and transparency provided by the government. Clients, as well as immigration practitioners, can encounter huge roadblocks when it comes to obtaining clarification on policies.
5. What do you see as the future of immigration law?
More applications being done through an online platform. This should (hopefully) lead to faster processing times and more accountability.
Gisela Curi’s Key Accomplishments
1. Having a family that rocks! I love my daughter, my partner and my family of friends that I have hand-picked in Canada.
2. At the professional level, I’m happy that I’ve been continuously challenged by taking on a variety of immigration cases.
3. At a very deep personal level, one of my best accomplishments has been personal growth. I can honestly be proud of my ability to get to know myself and being happy with whom I’ve become. I’m very lucky to live the life I’m living, and share it with the people I share it with.
