The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently released guidance to assist food and dietary supplement companies on how to convert the previous units of measure for folate, niacin, vitamin A, vitamin D, and vitamin E to the new units required on the updated Nutrition Facts and Supplement Facts labels. The guidance includes step by step instructions, conversion factors for each nutrient, and sample calculations for converting to the new units of measure.
In 2016, the FDA amended the regulations for the nutrition labeling of conventional foods and dietary supplements to update the Nutrition Facts and Supplement Facts labels. The regulations include updated Daily Values for folate, niacin, vitamin A, vitamin D, and vitamin E, in addition to other nutrients, based on newer scientific evidence.
Food manufacturers with $10 million or more in annual food sale have until January 1, 2020 to convert labels to meet the new labeling requirements. Small manufacturers with less than $10 million in annual food sales have until January 1, 2021
