A court in Sudan sentenced 27 intelligence agents on Monday 30 December 2019 to death for torture and murder. They were found guilty of deadly abuse against detained activist and teacher Ahmed al-Kheir in February 2019.
Al-Kheir was killed in detention following protests against former President Omar al-Bashir. He was killed at an intelligence services facility. He was detained on 31 January 2019 and was reported dead two days later. Security forces initially claimed he had died of poisoning.
Judge Sadok Abdelrahman who presided over the case sentenced the agents to death by hanging.
Sudan is one of African States which uphold the death sentence.
