Harry Meyer Kantor, who passed away on Saturday the 18th January 2020 in Cape Town, South Africa. The Law Society of Zimbabwe announced the death of the senior legal practitioner in a statement released on Tuesday.

Kantor was born on 24 December 1934 in Cape Town South Africa. He acquired his law degree at the University of Cape Town in the 1950s but moved to the then Rhodesia because of his opposition to the Apartheid policy. After initially practising with Greenblatt and Shandling, he and the late Mervyn Immerman subsequently founded Kantor & Immerman Legal Practitioners.

He practised law for 56 years with the firm or its predecessors. Kantor was also admitted to practice in South Africa, Lesotho and Victoria State in Australia. During his career, he handled many transactional and litigation matters involving the representation of Zimbabwe’s freedom fighters and political detainees. Among those he represented were Dr Fay Chung, the Late Morris Nyagumbo and Dr Nathan Shamuyarira.

Kantor was also an external examiner for the Property Conveyancing and Notarial Practice course at the University of Zimbabwe, a member of the Law Development Commission, Honorary Lawyer for the National Gallery of Zimbabwe and of the two Hebrew Congregations in Harare. He was the former Chairman of TN Bank (now Steward Bank) and Chairman of Gallery Delta and the Honde Valley Hydro-Electric Power Trust.

In 2015, Harry retired from Kantor & Immerman and joined his colleague, Louis Bennett, at Wilmot & Bennett Legal Practitioners.

Beyond law, Kantor was a religious man, committed to Judaism and was on the Board of Sharon School. He was also a marriage officer, performing many marriages. Kantor passionately loved both music and art. Lina, his wife, was a concert pianist and the couple attended many classical concerts performed locally.

He was also a member of the Friends of the Gallery, which supported and raised funds for the National Art Gallery of Zimbabwe of which he was a Board Member. Kantor was also a keen sportsman, playing tennis, squash and cricket. He loved cycling and participated in long-distance cycles around Harare. He loved to golf and was a key member of Wingate Golf Club where he handled many matters, pro bono for the Club, and played at every opportunity.

Kantor is survived by his wife Lina, children Gary, Michael and Linda and grandchildren Miranda and Tamsin. Kantor was laid to rest at the Pines Cemetery in Cape Town on Monday 21 January 2020.
