What is your favorite part about practicing health care law at McDermott?
As so many of my colleagues have expressed throughout this series, my favorite part of practicing healthcare law at McDermott is being a member of a collaborative and collegial team that is advising our diverse clients on their most critical and pressing issues. Having spent much of my career in-house, I have experienced firsthand how McDermott’s approach to client service, anchored in humility, empathy and practicality, consistently delivers differentiated value and results for our clients.
What is the biggest opportunity and greatest challenge facing clients in your area of focus today?
I believe that the transition to value-based arrangements will continue to accelerate. Collaborative Transformations will proliferate and present both tremendous opportunities for, and challenges to, traditional healthcare providers. Hospitals, health systems and other providers who embrace the challenges and opportunities presented by this paradigm shift will reap the benefits of their investments. Those who resist this cultural change risk losing ground and market share to their competitors.
What kind of client work gets you most excited when it comes across your desk?
I love solving problems with our clients regarding how to structure their various, multi-faceted relationships with physicians. However, I particularly enjoy working with integrated delivery systems and networks as well as new market entrants as they seek to advance their value-based care initiatives through collaborations with physicians in an ever-evolving regulatory environment.
What is the proudest moment of your career to date?
It always is tremendously gratifying to receive thanks from our clients upon the successful completion of a particularly challenging and intensive project. We are very fortunate that our clients have the confidence to entrust us to assist them with navigating complex and critical problems facing their organizations. I feel great pride whenever I hear that we have done so successfully and exceeded their expectations in the process.
What is an interesting fact about yourself that others may not know?
I have been an active member of a community garden in the Charlestown neighborhood of Boston for over 10 years. Our garden is and began with pioneering community members coming together to transform an urban brownfield into a vibrant greenspace that is open to the public. Apart from just loving to garden – I grow flowers and herbs – I am inspired by the impact we have on the neighborhood. Whether it is through our educational outreach program with an elementary school, our annual beloved events such as our Halloween festival or by providing a space for our neighbors to enjoy our beautiful gardens, our garden is a wonderful reminder of the power of community to drive meaningful change and improve the quality of life in a neighborhood.
