Jalen Ramsey, who famously arrived to training camp with the Jags last summer in an armored truck reminiscent of a Brinks truck fully equiped with bags of fake money, has made that dream into a reality a year later with the LA Rams. Ramsey and the Rams agreed to a 5-year $105M contract extension today becoming the first $100M defensive back in NFL history.
This contract completely upends the entire defensive back market, surpassing the second richest deal -which was done for Tre’Davious White of the Bills this past weekend- by $32M in overall value and by $16.2M in guarantees. Then third on that list is Darius Slay whose full 4-year contract is worth $50.05M with a $30.05M guarantee, which is less than half of Ramsey’s and it only gets more astonishing the further down that list you go. The closest comparison would be to Darrelle Revis’ 6-year $96M deal with the Bucs in 2013 but there were no guarantees in that deal at all.
The agent behind Jalen Ramsey is David Mulugheta of Athletes First, who has had a busy couple of weeks. He negotiated Budda Baker’s 4 year $59M contract extension -$33M guaranteed- with the Cardinals on August 25th, and Deshaun Watson’s 4 year $160M contract extension with the Texans 4 days ago on September 5th -$111M guaranteed- in addition to Ramsey’s deal today.
