The evolution of virtual health can be mapped using technology breakthroughs as road marks. The advent of the internet, voice over internet protocols (VoIP), cloud storage, broadband, video streaming, cloud computing, software as a service (SaaS) and artificial intelligence (AI) each precipitated virtual health breakthroughs. The COVID-19 pandemic stress-tested the entire infrastructure. At the same time, consumers drove access with the dominance of consumer platforms, communications and demands. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and state governments reacted by lessening regulations and increasing payment options. The effect of all three revealed massive healthcare disparities.
