On September 30 and October 1, Troutman Pepper attended the 2021 National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) Presidential Summit, “Taking the Politics Out of Hate,” held in Washington, DC.[1] Hosted by NAAG President and District of Columbia Attorney General Karl Racine, the summit focused on ways that attorney general offices can combat hate violence, including discussions on best practices for working alongside community partners and law enforcement officials.

The summit featured various presentations and panels, moderated by current and former attorneys general. Conversations involved discussions about our nation’s history surrounding hate and the lessons to be learned from it. Notable speakers included former U.S. Senator Doug Jones, John W. Franklin, cultural historian and grandson of a Tulsa Race Massacre survivor, and Sarah Collins-Rudolph, survivor of the 1963 Birmingham Church bombings.

The key takeaway surrounding the two-day event was that state attorneys general have the power to convene and should use it to condemn and combat hate.

As state attorneys general lead the fight against hate, we will continue to highlight these efforts here and through our state attorney general newsletter. Read more about the summit here.
