On November 2, Jason S. Miyares won the Virginia election to become Virginia’s first Latino attorney general. Miyares, a son of a Cuban refugee and a former criminal prosecutor, defeated two-term incumbent Attorney General Mark Herring. We have discussed Miyares’ campaign platform in detail here.

In 2015, Miyares was elected as a state delegate in Virginia House of Delegates for District 82 (Virginia Beach), becoming the first Cuban American elected to Virginia’s General Assembly. He serves on the House Courts of Justice Committee, Courts of Justice Civil Subcommittee, and the Privileges and Elections Committee.

Miyares also works as a private-practice attorney at Hanger Law in commercial and residential real estate. Previously, he served as a Virginia Beach assistant commonwealth’s attorney, where he handled over 600 cases with over a 90% conviction rate.

Miyares earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from James Madison University and his juris doctor from the College of William & Mary. A native of Virginia Beach, Miyares and his wife Page have three daughters.
