This WaPo piece had me pulling a double take: the Biden administration is now deporting some Venezuelan migrants to Colombia. I mean, maybe it’s been a long week (yes, I know it’s Tuesday), but what the actual F.
Here’s what’s going on: Biden is still enforcing the specious “Title 42” expulsions. (Yes, specious. I’m unhinged this evening.) That is, the administration is saying that because of Covid-19, the U.S. can repel would-be asylum seekers, among them, Venezuelans. But Biden doesn’t have diplomatic relations with Venezuela because the country is SUPER MESSED UP right now. In fact just a few short weeks ago, the Biden administration actually granted TPS status to Venezuelans currently present in the United States in recognition of the fact that such individuals cannot safely return to their country of origin.
But, oho, if Venezuelans managed to spend some time in Colombia before heading to the U.S., it’s apparently AOK to just ship them back there. No biggie.
Have the stomach to read more? CNN broke the news of this arrangement yesterday and here’s a link to their coverage.
