Now that 2022 is half over, and the pandemic appears to be winding down, it is time to review this year’s major developments in aviation and take a look ahead at how the rest of the year is shaping up.
There has been no shortage of controversial issues in commercial aviation so far this year. The rollout of the 5G communications spectrum got off to a contentious and bumpy start, and all of the issues are not yet resolved. In addition, the constant tug of war over masks and air travel was seemingly resolved in an instant by the courts. However, the issue remains lurking in the shadows with the Center for Disease Control’s decision to appeal the ruling.
In the drone world, time is running out for manufacturers and users to comply with the new remote identification requirements, while at the same time, the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit considers a case that could throw out the regulations entirely and require the FAA to start its rulemaking over. In addition, while an aviation rulemaking committee finally released its recommendations for beyond visual line of sight drone operations, an influential group of participants in the effort drafted one of the most scathing dissents that we have seen in a long time.
Urban air mobility also continues its slow march from vision to reality, with the FAA deciding to get back into the business of setting guidelines for vertiports and vertistops. These new standards differed substantially from heliport requirements, and the industry is not completely pleased with these initial steps.
Commercial space is also making great strides, and the National Transportation Safety Board wants to be involved. However, not everyone agrees with this move, and it is unclear what role the NTSB will play in this field.
Join Mark Dombroff and Mark McKinnon on June 23rd, 2022, for a complimentary webinar where we will take a look at where we are and where we are going in what is shaping up to be a very significant year for aviation. Among the topics we will discuss are:
- The war for 5G: is it over and who is winning?
- Is the mask mandate gone forever?
- Is drone industry ready for remote ID, and will the court send it back for more work?
- What is the outlook for commercial space, and who will be involved in overseeing its growth?
- Can the crewed and uncrewed aviation industries reach consensus on beyond visual line of sight flight?
- While the FAA is still handing out record-breaking penalties against passengers, has the end of the mask mandate stemmed the tide of air rage?
- What is on the horizon for urban air mobility?
As always, the audience will also have an opportunity to ask questions and shape the discussion. You will not want to miss this no-holds-barred discussion of the major issues facing aviation in 2022.
