Memorial Day 2022

Longtime readers of this blog know that Memorial Day is special here at the Franchise Law Update Blog. Memorial Day, of course, is the day established by General John A. Logan, Commander in Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, when we pause to remember, and honor, those who gave, as Abraham Lincoln so eloquently expressed it, the last full measure of devotion for their country.

In this vein, Lieutenant General Mark Hertling (ret.), one of the Commissioners of the United States American Battlefield Monuments Commission has a very appropriate Twitter thread up this weekend. The USABMC is the organization that is charged with the care and protection of American battlefield cemeteries abroad. His report of Memorial Day visits to Suresnes and Belleau Woods, among others, is quite moving.

On Memorial Day 5 years ago, @cnn asked me to come on air to discuss what the day meant to me.

I brought this box containing the photos of 253 soldiers I served with in combat who gave their last full measure of devotion.

This year, I did something different. A 🧵 1/24 pic.twitter.com/isIxDEeCVm

So, before you head to socially distanced events this holiday weekend–and with Covid cases on the rise, please do be careful, I kindly ask that you join me–and Fox Rothschild–in pausing to remember those who have, in the past and now, truly given the last full measure of devotion to our Nation. As General General Patton wisely noted, “It is foolish and wrong to mourn [those] who died. Rather, let us thank God that such [people] lived.”
