Editor’s Note: In this blog series, we are getting to know the members of the Texas Young Lawyers Association Board of Directors. TYLA, commonly called the “public service arm” of the State Bar of Texas, works to facilitate the administration of justice, foster respect for the law, and advance the role of the legal profession in serving the public. All TYLA programs are accomplished through the volunteer efforts of its board and committee members, with the cooperation of local affiliate young lawyers associations. Learn more at tyla.org.

Name: Kaylie Morgan

Employer/Organization: St. Mary’s University School of Law

Practice Area(s): Interest areas are corporate law and criminal law

Why did you join the TYLA board? As the State Bar of Texas Law Student Division chair, I serve as the law student liaison to the Texas Young Lawyers Association, or TYLA.

What advice would you give to other TYLA members who are looking for ways to grow professionally? One piece of advice I always share with others in the legal community and law school is to write your “why” on a piece of paper. More specifically, why law school or why this practice area? If we know the why, we can overcome the how. That piece of paper is something to look to on the hard and fantastic days, to remind us of our purpose or passion.

Before joining the TYLA board, what is your favorite experience with community or public service? During my 1L year of law school involving an organization I joined called the Juvenile Jurisprudence Association. JJA is a peer court program that allows high school students in the San Antonio community to get the opportunity of a second chance and not have a mistake carry with them for the rest of their life. In the fall of my 1L year, I decided to attend one of JJA’s Saturday adjudications. This organization gave me a once-in-a-lifetime kind of experience that touched my heart forever.

What was your favorite movie, TV show, musical artist, or song from high school/college? Step Brothers.
