According to this Seattle Times article, kids of color now make up 50.6% of enrollment in Washington’s public schools. This is a first for the state. The article notes that between 2009 and 2022 the percentage of kids identifying as a race other than white increased by almost 50%:

That’s crazy fast growth.

The article discusses the overall decrease in white children enrolled in public schools, which sounds like the result of Covid. It also discusses inequities in our public education system and how it fails many students of color. Hopefully the increase in kids of color will drive change at a faster rate.
