Below is this week’s congressional update by BakerHostetler’s Federal Policy team. We’ll continue to post in weeks when both chambers of Congress are in session.
HEADLINES
- A busy congressional schedule with over 100 committee meetings includes several cabinet secretaries, as well as hearings on two charged issues: turmoil in the banking sector, and the East Palestine rail disaster.
- President Joe Biden will host the 2023 Summit for Democracy.
- The House will take up Republicans’ signature energy legislation.
HOUSE
- The House will hold votes tonight through Thursday, taking up Republicans’ comprehensive energy legislation.
- The House Energy and Commerce Committee tomorrow will hold a hearing on the government response to the February rail disaster in East Palestine, Ohio.
- The Financial Services Committee will hold a hearing Wednesday on the federal response to recent banking turmoil, with leaders from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the Federal Reserve, and the Treasury Department.

SENATE
- The Senate returns today, aiming to finish consideration of legislation to repeal authorizations for use of military force against Iraq.
- The Senate Banking Committee tomorrow will hold a hearing on bank failures with the same witnesses who are appearing before the House Financial Services Committee.
- Budget hearings continue with the president’s Cabinet on both sides of the Capitol, including Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin at the Senate Armed Services Committee tomorrow and Attorney General Merrick Garland at the House Appropriations Commerce, Justice, and Science Subcommittee Wednesday.

WHITE HOUSE
- Tomorrow, Biden will travel to Durham, North Carolina, to kick off a three-week Investing in America tour.
- Tomorrow through Thursday, the administration will host the 2023 Summit for Democracy; Biden will speak Wednesday.
- Biden on Wednesday will also host a bilateral meeting with President Alberto Fernández of Argentina.
